County Durham is one of England’s most northerly counties with a rich and varied heritage and some of the most impressive scenery can be seen in the Durham Dales. Our self catering holiday cottage is located in Weardale one of the Northern Durham Dales. We are part of the North Pennines A.O.N.B. The scenery is superb, whichever season you choose to visit. There are many well mapped walks of varying length and difficulty starting from the door of the cottage or within a short drive.
The area is known for its dark starlit skies. And with low light pollution, here at Woodcroft Farm, on a clear night you will have a great view of the milky way.
There are also fishing opportunities in the area, we have our own stretch of private fishing on the river Wear which is available to our visitors. The river fishing season runs from 21st March each year until 30th October. A licence is required and can be arranged. There are several good, well stocked reservoirs within a 20 minute drive, details can be provided.
The North Pennines have been designated as an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty", with spectacular walks including the Weardale Way which passes through our farm and the Pennine Way which is within easy reach. There are excellent areas for walking and cycling - Hamsterley Forest, where cycle hire is available and Durham's disused railway tracks are within easy reach and cover many miles - routes can be provided. An abundance of footpaths and bridleways are available to explore where rare birds and plants can be seen.
If you're a keen mountain biker, there are lots of tracks surrounding our farm perfect for just that! or its only a 5 minute car ride to the beautiful Hamsterley forest, which is a bikers paradise! Bike hire is also available there!
